86 new cases of COVID-19 was traced

The data was gathered in two different batches that resulted in a total of 257 samples that was administered on Wednesday August 12.

The full breakdown is as follows –

A total of 86 samples are positive with geographic breakdown as follows:

– 1 case in Corozal (contact of a previous case)
– 2 in Caye Caulker
– 6 in Belize City
– 8 cases in Stann Creek District (2 related to previous identified case in Stann Creek and 6 as imported cases)
– 28 in Orange Walk (mostly related to construction site in San Pedro)
– 41 in San Pedro

The majority of these cases are related to previously identified cases and underscores the value of contact tracing that continues.

We have to commend the tireless work of the staff on the ground that remains alert and actively seeking more cases and the tireless effort of health staff.

Throughout the day tomorrow, we will be providing further details of the cases.

Note that the infographic now has the cases for San Pedro separately, the cases for Caye Caulker would be included in the Belize District tally.

Effective Monday August 17, 2020 vehicular entrance to the Western Regional Hospital parking area will now be the old exit road of the hospital compound. In this area the screening and triage booth is also located, where all patients will be screened before entering for health services. After being screened, patients will be directed to either the flu clinic, the outpatient department, the Maternal and Child health department, the mental health department or to the accident and emergency room. Also, please note that the parking area for visitors will be on the right of the parking lot as indicated by signs and the staff parking area will be on the left of the parking lot. The old entrance will only be used for ambulance, emergencies, and cargo. These changes have become necessary in order to mitigate the spread of the Covid-19 virus and to protect admitted patients and staff. The Management of WRH thanks you for your usual cooperation.

This is our data for today, a total of 84 samples have been processed, the last remaining batch will be processed throughout the night.

In this batch we have a total of 33 positive cases with the breakdown as follows:

– 31 cases in San Pedro (related to the three active clusters)
– 1 case in Belize City (related to a previously identified cases in Belmopan)
– 1 case in Belmopan (related to a previously identified case in Belmopan).

We currently have two hospitalized cases.

We should note that we currently have 10 out the 176 active cases in health staff (6 from private sector / 4 in the public sector) with the majority of these cases linked to interaction outside of the health care setting.

Please continue to exercise all necessary precautions at all times, both within the work setting, the family environment and in the public setting.

We should be providing further updates before midday tomorrow.

Details provided is that the grey SUV rear ended the pickup that caused the pickup to crash into an electrical lamp post. This is a developing story, we will have more details as it is available.

“I drove around the city tonight and the amount of people I had to tell to put on their mask or to wear it properly is no joke. I could have easily arrested over 100 persons. I cannot understand why some amongst us just don’t listen or don’t give a darn. What will it take for them to understand the severity of this virus and the importance of wearing a mouth and nose covering?”

A total of 144 samples have been processed throughout the day.

We have a total of 23 new positive cases with a preliminary breakdown as follows:

– 3 cases in Belmopan (2 are linked to the previous identified positive case in Belmopan and the other case is linked to San Pedro)

– 2 cases in Orange Walk (1 from Santa Marta and 1 from Orange Walk Town linked to a previously identified case)

– 1 case in Caye Caulker (with no apparent link to any previously identified case for now)

– 5 cases in Belize City (1 case with no apparent link to any previously identified cases, 4 others linked to previously identified cases)

The other 12 cases are in San Pedro.

As the links are more established, those will be restructured accordingly. This is to be noted as the infographic reflects where the individuals are swabbed ,but they may be employed in a different geographic area.

Belmopan. August 5, 2020.

Today at a press conference held in Belize City, it was announced that due to a spike in the number of COVID-19 cases in three districts, there will be a delay in the reopening of the Philip Goldson International Airport (PGIA).

Prime Minister Rt. Dean Barrow said that although the airport will not reopen, the weekly repatriation flights for Belizean nationals abroad will continue, including the 14-day mandatory quarantine upon arrival.

Additionally, the Minister of Education Hon. Patrick Faber announced that the reopening the schools will also be delayed. He said the Ministry will continue to monitor the situation as it relates to COVID-19, and will make adjustments as deemed necessary. Any details regarding distance learning programs and other preparations for reopening will be made public as they become available.

Director of Health Services Dr. Marvin Manzanero also announced that the preliminary results from tests conducted in San Pedro Town resulted in 14 new potential positive cases of COVID-19, but the Ministry is currently undergoing the confirmation process.

The opening of both the airport and schools will be announced at a later date.

Ministry of Health Identifies 15 Cases of COVID-19

Belmopan. August 4, 2020. 9:45 p.m.

Fifteen new cases of COVID-19 have been identified today as a result of the contact tracing of cases identified over the weekend. These cases are part of a record number of 148 samples processed in one day. The new cases are as follows.

Seven cases have been identified in Corozal. Seven cases have been detected in Orange Walk. San Pedro now has one new case.

Five cases are from the repatriation process and these persons are under quarantine orders. Two of the cases in Corozal are linked to the case identified over the weekend and three cases in Orange Walk are tied to the case identified in that district over the weekend. The remaining five cases appear to be unrelated; however, contact tracing is currently ongoing for possible links.

For now, the Ministry of Health calls on the entire nation to remain calm and to only listen to official sources of information. The Ministry will continue to update the public as information becomes available.

The public is reminded to maintain social distancing, practice good hand hygiene, and properly wear masks at all times in public settings. For health-related inquiries, call 0-800-MOH-CARE.
